Artificial Intelligence and Nursing Informatics: New Roles and Innovations

Evaluating the User Experience as Part of a Large Digital Nursing Documentation Re-Design

On March 21, 2023, Christine Suchecki, MSN, RN-BC (MGB- Director of Nursing Services Clinical Informatics, Digital), Christopher Holland, MBA (MGB- Product Manager, User Experience, Digital), and Naomi Mercier, DNP, RN-BC ( MGB- Clinical Lead Clinical Informatics) presented to the NENIC Community. They discussed the process, methods, results, and lessons learned for evaluating end-user experience as part of a large digital documentation redesign project.  User satisfaction, efficiency, and effectiveness were evaluated for current state and future state digital documentation among inpatient and emergency room nurses using standardized user experience (UX) methodologies. (Click here for the e-slides.)

The 21^st Century Cures Act: What Nurse Informaticists Need to Know

On October 25, 2022, Karen Bogard  MHA, RHIA (MGB-Data and Record Integrity, Senior Manager) presented an update on the 21st Centurty Cures Act. The 21^st Century Cures Act is an ONC (Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology) rule that is promoting the concept of patients being in charge of their own health records. This rule implements interoperability requirements that give patients more power in their health care, and access to information is key to making that happen. This educational session will offer a background on the regulations, outline the basics of the Cures Act, including exceptions, and will cover challenges in implementing the Cures Act. Nursing Informatics Research: 2 Years in Review

On November 16, 2021,  Andrew B. Phillips Ph.D., RN ( Associate Professor, MGH Institute of Health Professions) presented an overview of Nursing Informatics Research over the last 2 years - the Pandemic years.  He reviewed over 1800 articles and summarized key trends and spotlighted a few personal favorites.

Thriving through the Pandemic and Driving towards the Future: Lessons from the National Library of Medicine (NLM)

On October 19, 2021 Patricia Flately Brennan RN, Ph.D.; Director, National Library of Medicine presented a view from the NLM and discussed the value of data systems today and in the future. She also discussed ways creativity and innovation can improve patient care. It was an inspiring presentation.

Report on The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equality (National Academy of Medicine)

On June 22, 2021, Dr. Victoria Tiase RN, PhD, FAAN, FAMIA (Director of Research Science and Informatics Strategy at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and NAM Committee on the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Member) presented an overview of the recently published report. Click here for the e-slides.

On May 14, 2021  Sarah Rossetti, RN, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA, and a report on the Output from the 25 by 5 Symposium to Reduce Documentation Burden on U.S. Clinicians by 75% by 2025.  In addition, Dr. Rossetti RN, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA presented additional work specific to reducing the burden of nursing documentation. 

2021 BMC, COVID, Public Health and Informatics: Outreach strategies to ambulatory and underserved communities

On April 13, 2021 Boston Medical Center presented COVID, Public Health and Informatics: Outreach strategies to ambulatory and underserved communities by Geralyn Saunders MSN, RN ( CNIO), Meg Grande MSN, RN (Asst. CNIO) and John Cyzon (Manager of the Ambulatory, Willow/Pharmacy, & Clinical Decision Support Teams).

2021 Open Notes and the 21^st Century Cures Act: Lessons Learned from the Open Notes Initiative

On March 16, 2021 NENIC held its annual Business meeting (on-line)  and then offered Open Notes and the 21^st Century Cures Act: Lessons Learned from the Open Notes Initiative -presented by Jan Walker RN, MBA (Associate Professor HMS, BIDMC) and Suzanne Leveille RN, PhD (Professor, UMass-Boston, BIDMC). It was a wonderful evening with abundant 'lessons learned from their work with the Open Notes initiative and research.

2021 COVID Series: Vaccinations!

On February 11, 2021, Lori Connors MS, RN-BC, (Clinical Informaticist, Lifespan Clinical Informatics Department) and Louisa Jones BSIS- ( Applications Manager – Regulatory & Quality Information Services -Lifespan, R.I.) discussed the first stage of deploying vaccinations into the community.  This front-row seat presented insights into  the following:

2020 COVID Series: Digital Transformation and Optimized Clinical Workflows to Support COVID-19 Rapid Response 

On  September 29, 2020 (6:00-7:30 pm) NENIC welcomed Hartford Healthcare's Informatics team. They presented on  Digital Transformation and Optimized Clinical Workflows to Support COVID-19 Rapid Response with an emphasis on Clinical Data Visualization, Colleague re-deployment, Surge Management as well as PPE Challenges.

2020 COVID Series: Boston Medical Center - Innovations in Informatics

On May 19, 2020 NENIC welcomed Geralyn Saunders MS, RN-BC (CNIO), Lois Howry  MSN, RN (Ambulatory Clinical Lead) and Tami Chase BSN, RN (Nursing Director - Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Quality Metrics)  and the entire Boston Medical Center's Nursing Informatics team for an update on Innovations in Informatics. The speakers provided a high level overview of a variety of COVID19 related innovations including the following: new telephone COVID19 triage protocols for telephone screening, a new pediatric, community  vaccine van for children, the E.H.R. infrastructure required  to manage surge capacity in nontraditional settings, tele-sitters to monitor ICU patients in nontraditional settings , and  a Respite Hospital for recovering homeless patients in 4 days. 2020 COVID19 Series: Simplifying Documentation

On April 19, 2020 Christine Suchecki, MSN-BC, RN, Nursing Lead for Clinical Content and Informatics at Partners eCare, Partners Healthcare describes small changes that were made within the EHR to guide decreased documentation expectations in the wake of the COVID-19 surge.  This webinar highlights the process of making the changes and operational challenges of implementing a model of reduced documentation across a large health system.

2020  Designing a mobile application to increase health care engagement among a vulnerable and underserved population - ( Members Only)

On March 18, 2020 Holly Fontenot PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FAAN brought her expertise in building a mobile application (app) to increase health care engagement among a vulnerable and underserved population to NENIC. Specifically, HPV vaccination among young adult sexual minority males. She used community-based research in conjunction with human-centered design to build this innovative app. The lecture is a case study of app design, development, and pilot testing.

2019 Fighting the Opioid Crisis: A Universal Screening Tool. 

On October 29, 2919 Kristin Hill MA ( Practice Administrator,  Population Behavioral Health, Department of Psychiatry, Rush University Medical Center)   sharing their experience implementing a comprehensive program, utilizing an online universal opioid screening tool, and treatment for patients identified as opioid users. This presentation will focus on Program design, logistics, garnering internal organizational political support, EHR design and analytics. 

2019 Optimizing the E.H.R. with an essential data set: decreasing documentation

On March 26, 2019 Darinda Sutton MSN, RN-BC, FACHE (CNO/ VP Cerner Corporation) recognized the value and expense of nursing time spent as they manage many over designed E.H.R.'s.  Ms. Sutton share her work seeking to establish an essential clinical data set standard with partner organizations. Specifically she will focus of  reduced time executing admission history, reduced number of clicks and higher utilization of data elements.

2018 Beyond the E.H.R. : What's Next for Nursing Informatics

On October 29, 2018 Mark Sugrue MSN, RN-BC, FHIMSS, CPHIS  ( CNIO / ACNO Professional Practice, UMass Medical Center) presented his thoughts on the future of nursing informatics. His explored various national initiatives that are impacting nursing practice, the value of the E.H.R. post implementation and new technologies that are impacting nursing practice today. 

2018 Nurse Innovation: Disrupting Healthcare

 On March 27, 2018, NENIC welcomed Rebecca Love MSN, RN, ANP to speak on Nurse Innovation. Nurses, who represent nearly 4 million of the US healthcare workforce, are natural innovators and are constantly innovating at the bedside. Their wealth of knowledge and practical experience, contain the skills to transform healthcare when given the tools to take these processes beyond the bedside to scale. Ms. Love identified nurse leaders who are challenging the status quo using innovation and business principles. She focused on how these principles can be used to the field of nursing informatics to unleash the future.

2017 Using Health IT and Patient Engagement to Improve Outcomes in Hospitalized Patients

On October 2, 2017, Dr. Patricia Dykes PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI provided a review of the literature critical to healthcare team communication and patient engagement. She delivered insights from her research and projects that leverage health IT to improve team communication, patient engagement, and patient safety. Click here for the presentation slides.

2017 Driving Analytics to the Point of Care

 On April 12, 2017, Mr. Mark Sugrue MSN, RN-BC, FHIMSS, CPHIMS the CNIO at UMass Memorial Medical Center presented "Driving Analytics to the Point of Care". The program described the following: 1) cognitive computing as a method for enabling decision making at the point of care, 2) the importance of capturing health and care data in a structured way to achieve clinical outcomes measurement and 3) natural language processing and the future role in nursing documentation.  Click here for presentation pdf.

2016 Nursing Clinical Decision Support: Governance, Life Cycle and Implementation at the Bedside

 On November 3, 2016 NENIC invited Denise Goldsmith MS, MPH, RN, FAAN and Karen Bavuso MSN, RN  to describe  Nursing Clinical Decision Support (CDS): Governance,Life Cycle and Implementation at the Bedside.  The  program provided an overview of the implementation of Nursing Clinical Decision Support (CDS) in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The Genomic Evidence to Improve Quality

On October 20, 2015 The New England Nursing Informatics Consortium (NENIC) and Boston Children’s Hospital invited Kathleen McCormick PhD, RN, FACMI, FAAN, FHIMSS, a senior practitioner, researcher, and policy executive in health informatics, bioinformatics, and gerontology, to speak about Genomics. She has worked for the last 17 years in the industry to support the NIH, DOD, CDC in genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics. 

The New Nursing Informatics Scope and Standards of Practice

On February 10, 2015 The New England Nursing Informatics Consortium (NENIC) and Boston Children’s Hospital were proud to jointly offer this exciting update by Dr. Cheryl Parker. Dr. Parker was a member of the ANA’s Scope and Standards revision workgroup and presented on the history of nursing informatics scope and standards of practice, the new standards and future trends in nursing informatics. Boston Medical Center: An EPIC Big Bang

On October 9, 2014 NENIC partnered with Boston Medical Center’s Chief Nursing Informatics Officer, Geralyn Saunders MS, RN, and her team to present ‘best practices” learned from their recent EMR implementation. The focus of the presentation was on project management, meeting implementation milestones, education, and preparing staff.  

Using Simulation to Educate Interprofessional Teams in Oral Systemic Health

On March 18, 2014 NENIC and Northeastern University’s Bouve College of Health Science partnered to present an exciting educational evening. Dr. Maria Dolce PhD, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, FACHE, Dr. Laura Mylott RN, PhD, ANP BC, and Dr. Jaime Usler LPD, ATC  lectured on experiential education, simulation, clinical informatics, interprofessional collaborative practice and advanced clinical practice. NENIC members also were able to tour the Goldstein Simulation Suite.

2013 HIMSS Nursing Informatics Institute

On November 1, 2013, NENIC partnered with HIMSS, Boston Children’s Hospital, and the Organization of Nurse Leaders to bring the HIMSS NI institute to New England for the second year It was a day of sharing knowledge about the role of nurses in implementing information technology, enhancing nursing workflow, promoting patient safety and yielding outcomes that improve patient care.

Wanted Emerging Authors: Posters to Presentations

On October 8, 2013 NENIC hosted an education session about how to develop a scientific abstract and preparing for publication. Dr. Patti Dykes RN, FAAN, FACMI lectured on how to create a scientific abstract. Then Dr. Dykes was joined by fellow NENIC experts: Denise Goldsmith RN, MS, MPH , Rita Zielstorff RN, MS, FACMI and Maria Hendrickson RN-BC, MSN, MSCS for coaching sessions with NENIC members. It is our hope that this session, created with feedback from our annual symposium, will foster more posters and publications.

E-Health: Are You Engaged?

On March 14, 2013, NENIC hosted Ms. Susan Hull MSN, RN (Chief Health Informatics Officer, Diversinet Corporation; Alliance for Nursing Informatics: Co-chair Consumer and Personal Health ONC Pledge Task Force) to present current strategies, tools and shifting attitudes in the world of e-health.

ACD: A Quest for Consensus in Clinical Documentation – A PRELUDE TO AN EPIC JOURNEY

On Tuesday November 13, 2012, Denise Goldsmith, Executive Director, Informatics for Nursing and Patient Care Services at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, presented a model for standardizing acute care documentation between two large academic medical centers.

In her position, Ms. Goldsmith provides leadership in creating an infrastructure that captures Nursing’s and other Health Professional’s unique contribution to patient and family care; direction for and management of advanced clinical system analysis and informatics throughout the Patient Care Services department; and collaborates with others to identify opportunities for work process improvement of information management.

She is an integral part of the NENIC family, the NENIC to the ANI Governing board of Directors, a member of the ANI steering committee and was recently selected by AMIA’s Nursing Informatics Working Group members to serve as Member-at-Large for 2013/14.

Health IT and Patient Safety: Implications of the Recent IOM Report

On June 5, 2012, Dr. Bates presented  Health IT and Patient Safety: Implications of the recent IIOM Report. This presentation focused on the recent IOM report Health IT and Patient Safety: Building Safer Systems for Better Care released: November 8, 2011.
